Are you guys riding your bikes or flying in and getting a rental cage? Have you considered shipping your bikes and flying in so you can enjoy riding them without a long time-consuming ride to this part of the world? Might not be that much more expensive than a rental cage.
If you want to miss the crowds at the big giant heads, go in the winter. The Sturgis crowds start about Aug 1, build up to a peak about Aug 10, and decline back to normal tourist levels about Aug 16. Admission to Mount Rushmore is free but you have to pay $8.00 to park your car. I'm sure that's not a big thing to you but it's always been free until about a year ago and the people around here hate the "new & improved" Rushmore. Trees replaced with ugly concrete parking structure.
How much time are you planning to spend in Wyoming and South Dakota? I can recommend some places to go. Let me know.
